Before the Doors Open, the Branding Starts Working
On February 2, 2017, Black Diamond Designs completed a large-format retail construction barricade wrap installation at Phipps Plaza in Buckhead, Atlanta, Georgia, promoting the upcoming arrival of The Public Kitchen & Bar. It shows what a retail barricade wrap Atlanta shoppers walk past can do for a business that hasn’t opened yet.
The project transformed a temporary restaurant construction wall into a bold, floor-to-ceiling advertising display featuring oversized food photography, dramatic typography, and shopping-center branding.
Instead of leaving shoppers looking at a blank construction barricade, the installation delivered a clear message:
THE PUBLIC KITCHEN & BAR. COMING SOON.

Transforming a Construction Barricade Into an Advertising Opportunity
At a destination like Phipps Plaza, appearance matters.
When a new restaurant prepares to open inside a shopping center, its construction barricade occupies valuable visual space. A plain wall conceals the work underway, but professionally installed barricade graphics can do much more.
They can announce a new business, establish brand identity, and build anticipation before the first customer walks through the door.
For The Public Kitchen & Bar, the visual presentation was especially important. The completed barricade combined enormous, richly detailed food images with a clean black background and highly visible white lettering.
One side featured oversized burger photography. The opposite side showcased fresh food imagery against a dark wood background.

At the center, the restaurant’s coming-soon message stood out against a dramatic black field, accompanied by the Phipps Plaza logo.

The finished presentation turned a temporary wall into a visual feature of the shopping-center corridor.
Retail Barricade Wrap Atlanta: What the Phipps Plaza Installation Required
Large retail barricades require a different approach from ordinary signs or small wall decals.
This installation extended across a substantial section of the mall corridor, incorporating large photographic graphics, oversized lettering, and an existing access doorway.
Professional installation required attention to several important details:
- Large-format graphic alignment: Keeping photographic details and design elements consistent across adjoining sections of a long wall.
- Architectural obstacles: Planning graphic placement around access doors, wall edges, and other physical features.
- High-visibility branding: Preserving the impact and readability of the restaurant’s message across the completed barricade.
- Shopping-center presentation: Delivering an attractive finished installation appropriate for a prominent retail environment.

Doorways are where barricade graphics most often give themselves away. When an image runs across a door, the artwork has to line up on both sides of the frame so the photo still reads as one picture, and the door still has to open and close for the crews working behind the wall.
Our goal was to make the temporary barricade feel like an intentional part of the restaurant’s brand presentation rather than an unfinished construction area.
Why Retail Barricade Wraps Matter During Store Construction
Construction doesn’t have to mean losing visibility.
For restaurants, national retailers, shopping centers, and commercial developers, custom barricade graphics provide several practical advantages:
- They conceal unfinished construction areas from the public.
- They create advertising space within active shopping corridors.
- They communicate upcoming openings.
- They help maintain a professional appearance throughout the construction process.
They also allow businesses to establish brand recognition before their permanent storefront is ready.

The Phipps Plaza installation is an example of how thoughtful graphic presentation can make a temporary construction wall a valuable marketing asset. Eleven days later, we brought the same pre-opening idea to glass with the Sephora window graphics we installed in Buckhead.
